Although Gaps Sabuero hails from a city in the Philippines best known for its waterfalls, nowadays he finds himself treading a different body of water. In 2015, he packed up his life and headed to Siargao Island, with what seemed like nothing. “A few shirts, boardies, bodyboard, fins, laptop, a barenaked DSLR, and a GoPro,” he recalls. But essentially, it was all that he needed. it was his combined passion for waves and photography that pushed him to dive headfirst into the country’s best waves.
A year hence, Gaps has built a promising career for himself, although he won’t say so just yet. He works with and continues to learn from top class watermen, photographing surf and lifestyle. “I owe my dream this island and everyone in it. It’s the only way I know how to give back,” he says. His dedication and talent is evident in his work, which embody the soul of the island he feels he owes so much to.
